DONATION
We here at Rooster Walk wanted to take a moment to once again acknowledge the incredible tragedy and hardships that Hurricane Helene brought to so many in SWVA, WNC and beyond. Though hurricane headlines no longer dominate our social media feeds, the struggle and challenges of rebuilding and rebounding remain all too real for so many. Our hearts go out to those who are dealing with the aftermath of such a horrific natural disaster.
We at Rooster Walk struggled with figuring out the balance of how to be respectful, responsive and responsible to the tragedy. We helped by donating and transporting supplies to WNC in the immediate wake of the storm, but even as the weeks passed, it didn’t feel quite right to be promoting a music festival, or ticket sales, in mid-October. So we pushed our early bird announce date back. And we took a look at ourselves, our mission, and how our thread fit in the fabric of the mid-Atlantic region… how we could help, and how we couldn’t.
As a nonprofit that’s dedicated to promoting music arts and education in our home of Martinsville-Henry County, we fund an endowment scholarship and a music instrument program for local public schools. We also put on events that strive to bring good people together to appreciate the present, celebrate life and the arts. And like everyone else, we also have to pay our own bills, week to week, month to month. So while we don’t have the cash on hand to donate massive dollars to relief efforts, we decided there are things we can do to play our small part in helping those areas of NC and VA that need support.
We landed on two conclusions that we wanted to share:
1. From Nov. 12-Dec. 31, $5 of every admission ticket sold will be donated to the United Way’s efforts to support Helene victims in the mid-Atlantic region.
2. Music is one of the ways that people get through hard times, and having something fun or positive to look forward to (like a favorite spring festival), can also play an important role in surviving hardship. So we’re gonna try like crazy to put on the best Rooster Walk possible… It is our 15th anniversary after all!
Since our first festival in 2009, countless bands from SWVA and WNC have graced our stages; thousands and thousands of music fans from the same areas have attended our events. Both groups have played a major role in helping RW survive and grow and continue. We are so grateful for that. And we hope that, come May, things will have gotten a lot easier for everyone who is still battling the storm’s aftermath.
So, do your best to keep dancing, and keep playing, and keep trying. We’ll do the same. And hopefully we can do it together, over a drink in front of a stage, this May at Pop’s Farm.
